2012 was a really successful year for our Level 3 students. Aswell as some significant commissions that came off the back of the Trip to New York, a number were successful in some of the major competitions. Notable were four students who were chosen to exhibit in the Serco London Transport Poster exhibition that was held at the London Transport Museum. Finn Clark who graduated in 2012 was the overall winner. His winning poster can been seen at Tube stations all over the underground. Well done to Elena Boils and Oliver Kellett who also were part of the exhibition.

More news regarding our most recent graduates include Jim Boswell being commissioned to produce illustrations for  the Folio Society. James also had success at D&AD New Blood: Best in Year – D&AD 2012 Illustration – Little White Lies.

Charlotte Trounce, who graduated in 2011, along with Linda Scott have both just recently been commissioned and subsequently published in the Dutch edition of Jamie magazine. Charlotte also had success in the London Transport poster competition in 2011 when came third.

The illustrator Mark Smith recently visited the course and presented his work to all 3 years. Mark was due to speak at our London illustration forum but had to pull out at the last minute, so we are very grateful to him for coming down to Falmouth to speak.

On the subject of Visiting Lecturers Levels 2 & 3 will be able to benefit from an event that our Learning Futures department have organised for Tuesday 5th February. For Level 3 students there will be the opportunity to attend a series of presentations on the subject of Business Skills. This is part of our Professional Practice delivery. Themes will include ‘Business Start Up’, ‘Tax Issues’, and ‘Intellectual Property Rights’. In the afternoon 3 ex graduates from Illustration (Owen Davey, Emma Dibben, Robert Fresson) will be talking to Level 3 students about how they have built their careers. Two of these ex graduates will also be giving talks to Level 2 students in the morning regarding their working practices.

The Level One London Study Trip Dec 2012

Here are some photographs from our recent Level One study trip to London. The trip is a professional practice visit for level one students enabling them to meet some of the world’s top art directors, designers, publishers and agents. On this trip visits included Transworld, Walker books, Nobrow, The Big Orange, Artworks agency, Debut Art, Dorling Kindersley amongst others. The visit was also notable for a very successful Illustration Forum day that was held at The London College of Communication (for which we are very grateful). The forum event included three fantastic speakers: Nick White, Laura Carlin and Graham Rawle. Many thanks go to Sue Clarke and Rachel Dunn for organising this trip. More photographs of this trip will follow in a future post.

Welcome to the official Falmouth University BA (Hons) Illustration Blog. We’ve been talking about doing this for some time now and we hope it will be worth it. The intention is for the blog to be an informal and simple way of connecting prospective, current, and former students as well as the wider public with what has become one of the most respected degree courses of its kind in the country.

The blog will remain distinct from our own course specific website and will focus on news as it happens on the course. There will be plenty of student work on show, news and reports on stay trips that have happened and are about to happen and updates on the successes of ex students and alumni. Students and staff will drive the content of the blog on a weekly basis while feedback will be welcomed from anyone interested in the course. Ex students in particular are particularly encouraged to get involved by letting us know what they have been up to since graduating.

The next 5-8 weeks are going to be a busy time for staff and students with assessments and interviews almost upon us, with a Level 2 study trip to Barcelona, mixed in for good measure. Hopefully in the next posting I’ll be able to report on what was a very successful Level One study trip to London that culminated in a really inspiring Illustration Forum (in collaboration with The London College of Communication) early last December.
