Many thanks to the students that presented the BA Illustration staff with the hamper on Friday. It was really appreciated. Any staff that we’re not there then drop in to claim your share of the booty! We are looking forward to seeing everyone at new designers next week….
The studios are empty, most work is off the display boards now, hardly any students are to be seen. The distant sound of Wimbledon can be heard through open windows. It can only mean one thing; the lull before the creative storm that is the New Designers and D&AD New Blood graduate showcases. Staff are working hard to get everything ready to be packed away into vans and driven up to the capital on Friday. Watch out London! Falmouth are coming…
Any ex Falmouth students, that want to come along, it would be great to see you…

Last Wednesday saw our students, alumni and staff celebrating the successes of our recent graduates in the field of publishing for young audiences. Falmouth alumni whose books were on sale during the evening included amongst others:
The event was organised by Mark Foreman and Keryn Bibby and we are extremely grateful to the Falmouth Bookseller (Falmouth’s very own award winning book shop) and Ron Johns for hosting us for the evening. Those that attended included Emma Yarlett, Sophia Matthew (art director at Oxford University Press, and our new external assessor Peter Lloyd from Southampton Solent University. We hope very much that this will be the first of many joint events at this great bookshop…
Last week saw the private view of our 1st & 2nd year exhibition. This show coincides with the main degree show and is held at the Wellington Terrace Site in Falmouth. It is an opportunity for students to showcase the work that they have been producing throughout the year. Students and staff had been working hard on the Sunday to get the work up and the show looked fantastic. The private view was well attended and gave a real insight into diversity of projects undertaken by levels 1 & 2. The work was of a really good standard and it was great to see students really beginning stretch themselves both in terms of the development of their visual language but also their approach to visual problem solving. Many thanks to Natalie and Sue and all the staff and students that were involved.
Last night’s private view was great success. The evening started with Ginny Button (Head of the School of Art) announcing the School Awards. BA Illustration had 3 winners. Sarah Clifford won the ‘Outstanding Studentship’ award, David Doran won ‘Outsanding Student Achievement’ award and Rosalie. Darien Jones won the ‘Taplin Travel Bursary’ award.
The exhibition itself was packed and the sun was shining on what clearly was the hottest day of the year so far. There was a great atmosphere of celebration that was add
ed to by the distant sounds of the samba band that was playing outside mixing with the distant sound of the Falmouth sea Shanty Festival in Events Square. It was great to see some longstanding friends of the Course in attendance such as Gary Long and Professor John Vernon Lord.
It seems only a short time ago that the current graduating students were being interviewed for their places on the course. They have achieved an enormous amount during their three years and the staff wish them the best for the future. Now onto New Designers and D&AD New Blood…..
Here are some photo’s from the evening..
The Falmouth Illustration 2014 degree show opened to the public this morning with the private View kicking off at 6pm tonight. Students have done a great job of hanging an exceptional show. The work being exhibited has been produced during their final year of study and ranges across all fields of the subject, including editorial, advertising, publishing, fashion, information and authorial illustration. The show comes soon after our highly successful professional practice study trips to locations that include New York, London, Bologna and San Fransisco. This year has been marked by significant student successes including two AOI new talent award winners Katie Ponder & David Doran, YCN student award winner Bridie Cheeseman, Macmillan children’s book prize Highly Commended – Briony May Smith, The Lemniscaat Illustration Award 2014 winner Freya Hartas. Not to mention the successes this year of our alumni: Rebecca Cobb – short listed for the Kate Greenaway 2014 short list, Anne Marie Jones – V&A Cover Illustration Award 2014 and AOI Children’s Book Award 2014 Winner: Will Grill.
Both our’Fold’ and ‘B Side’ collectives have stands at the show as does our current quotes and Sayings Volume 9. The show will be open to the Public from 10am until 5 each day until Tuesday 17th June. Please come along if you’re in the area.
