New Academic Year Begins
Apologies for the blog being dormant for some time. I am just preparing to re engage with updating it on a regular basis. We have lots of news and images to upload since the last post including our stands at D&AD New Blood and New Designers. I shall hopefully be able to start feeding this into the blog over the next week or so.
Week of Visiting Lecturers at Falmouth Illustration
BA Illustration students at Falmouth University have just enjoyed a series of visits by range of visiting lecturers covering themes such as professional practice, editorial illustration, collectives, illustration agencies, life drawing, painting techniques, children’s picture book illustration with a workshops in digital illustration and web site optimization still to come.
Following on from Gary Long‘s scenario based life drawing day in the previous week, Tim Clarey, successful local artist and illustrator worked with Level 2 students on Tuesday, providing additional specialist advice to students interested in ‘wet media’, painting techniques.
On Wednesday both Holly Wales and Emma Yarlett visited. Holly is an established illustrator and academic, working in both the UK and the US. She gave a fantastic presentation of her work to Level 3 students and then held portfolio reviews on the students New York portfolios.
Emma is a recent graduate of Falmouth who is already making waves in the publishing industry. Her first author, illustrated book ‘Sydney, Stella & the Moon’ has just been published by Templar Books. It was this book that formed her presentation in the morning. In the afternoon she was able to look at students portfolios.
On Friday we were able to welcome back Robert Fresson, another former graduate of the course. Robert, who left the RCA last year gave a demonstration of traditional Japanese Woodblock printing (Moku Hanga) normally associated with the Ukiyo-e artistic genre. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to witness such a specialist technique at first hand. Robert spent 3 months in Japan learning this technique from a master print maker as part of his studies at the Royal College of Art.
Thanks to all of the visting lecturers who took part. We look forward to next week’s sessions from Jago Silver (digital media) and the extra web optimization session for Level 3 students with another session from Gary Long (for Level 1 students) still to come.
Falmouth Illustration Students in New York
Falmouth University Level 3 Illustration students have just returned from a successful and exciting trip to New York. All students had diaries filled with appointments to visit New York’s top illustration agencies, publishing houses and design groups. Some visits were set up in advance using the contacts that tutors have built up over many years, such as the Illustrators agent Peter Lott at the prestigious Society of Illustrators and the children’s book publisher Holiday House. Students were given a warm and enthusiastic welcome and were offered honest and insightful feedback on their portfolios: important advice for their future careers. Other appointments were set up by the students themselves with design companies such as Pentagram, The New York Times, Penguin and for some lucky students, the legendary designer Milton Glaser. The excitement of experiencing the industry first hand was palpable as the students met up in the evenings to discuss their meetings, and all were left feeling inspired by those who had seen them. Hugh Cowling summed up his experience : ‘I have learnt so much from this week and feel that I really made the most out of it. I had 13 portfolio reviews so I have come back with my head full of advice and suggestions on how to improve my options for when I graduate.’
Illustrative Life Drawing with Gary Long
The course was really happy to welcome back, artist Gary Long for a day of scenario based life drawing with Level 2 students. Gary worked as the course’s resident life drawing tutor for 18 years until he retired two years ago. Gary’s background is as an illustrator working in both the UK and Canada but for a number of years has focussed on painting, particularly Landscapes. His work can been in numerous galleries throughout the UK.
The main illustration seminar room was temporarily converted into a Jazz Club with students and staff posing while music from Gary’s extensive Jazz record collection provided the soundtrack. Gary will be returning to repeat the session for Level One students in June.

Congratulations to Level 2 student David Doran who has been shortlisted in a group of 20 students from nearly 1400 that entered the PENGUIN DESIGN AWARD 2013.
This follows on from another Level Two student from two years ago (Adam Quinton) who was also shortlisted at this stage for his cover of ‘James & the Giant Peach’.
David’s cover for Raymond Chandler’s ‘The Big Sleep’ will now go into the final stages of judging. The winner will be announced on 19th June.
Good Luck David!
Falmouth Students Travel to New York
Around forty of our undergraduate illustration students are about to travel to New York to show their portfolios of work to some of the best art directors in the world. This study visit has been taking place now for well over 15 years and offers students the opportunity to get feedback on work that has been in development for the last year and a half.
Photos from the trip will be posted as soon as they come in.
Senior Falmouth Illustration lecturers Contribute to Significant Publications.
March saw senior lecturers Natalie Hayes and Mark Foreman both have work published in significant literary and fashion publications.
Level two tutor Natalie was asked by the celebrated Milliner Stephen Jones to contribute an essay on hand drawn illustration and its position in the digital age for the fashion & style journal called ‘A Magazine Curated By:’ The work of Level Three BA (Hons) Illustration student Patrick Atkins was featured in the article.
Level three tutor Mark was asked to contribute a number of artworks to the Quarterly ‘Ambit’ literary journal that prints original poetry, short fiction, art and reviews.
Both will hopefully be available in the Woodlane library soon
Illustration Alumni Visit
On Tuesday 5th February Levels 2 and 3 were visited by three of our most successful recent graduates, Emma Dibben, Owen Davey and Robert Fresson as part of a Business Forum event organised jointly with our Learning Futures department. The day was a fantastic success, starting with a series of business related lectures in the main lecture theatre and culminating in an afternoon of illuminating talks by by our visiting alumni.
Owen Davey is a freelance Illustrator, well known for his children’s Picture Books but has worked extensively within editorial and advertising areas too. His work has been published in every continent except Antarctica, including picture books in UK, America, Australia, France & China. http://www.owendavey.com
In 2011, Owen won ‘Junior Magazine Most Promising New Talent Award’ for my debut picture book, Foxly’s Feast.Clients include: Orange, BBC, Microsoft, Persil, The Guardian, New York Times, The Times, The Telegraph, Jamie Oliver
Emma Dibben has become well known for her splatters, fingerprints and splodges, (You may recognize her work from the Waitrose Bag for Life), a visual language that she has carefully developed and is now part of her trademark style.
On graduating in 2004, with a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Illustration, Emma and moved to Bristol.Commissions soon followed and saw her creating images for prestigious clients including Waitrose, The Guardian and the BBC.
Whilst food illustration is a core element of her practice, Emma thrives in the challenge of editorial illustration with commissions from the Guardian, Conde Nast and the Financial Times amongst others. http://www.emmadibben.com
Flag enthusiast, artist and illustrator Robert G. Fresson has spent the last few years honing the usage of technical drawing tools and materials. He has his own drawing board and some French curves. He also has an inclination towards off-white papers, Ukiyo-e from Japan and CMYK colour separation. Humour is an important aspect to his work, and he has been quoted as saying (probably to himself): “while it is difficult for me to be seriously funny, I find I have an aptitude for being funnily serious”. His lifelong dream is to own a cabin in Novascotia, though conversely he currently lives on a boat on the River Avon in Bath.
Robert has recently completed his MA at the Royal College of Art http://www.rgfresson.co.uk
There is more to come soon on the Level 2 trip Barcelona….
2012 was a really successful year for our Level 3 students. Aswell as some significant commissions that came off the back of the Trip to New York, a number were successful in some of the major competitions. Notable were four students who were chosen to exhibit in the Serco London Transport Poster exhibition that was held at the London Transport Museum. Finn Clark who graduated in 2012 was the overall winner. His winning poster can been seen at Tube stations all over the underground. Well done to Elena Boils and Oliver Kellett who also were part of the exhibition.
More news regarding our most recent graduates include Jim Boswell being commissioned to produce illustrations for the Folio Society. James also had success at D&AD New Blood: Best in Year – D&AD 2012 Illustration – Little White Lies.
Charlotte Trounce, who graduated in 2011, along with Linda Scott have both just recently been commissioned and subsequently published in the Dutch edition of Jamie magazine. Charlotte also had success in the London Transport poster competition in 2011 when came third.
The illustrator Mark Smith recently visited the course and presented his work to all 3 years. Mark was due to speak at our London illustration forum but had to pull out at the last minute, so we are very grateful to him for coming down to Falmouth to speak.
On the subject of Visiting Lecturers Levels 2 & 3 will be able to benefit from an event that our Learning Futures department have organised for Tuesday 5th February. For Level 3 students there will be the opportunity to attend a series of presentations on the subject of Business Skills. This is part of our Professional Practice delivery. Themes will include ‘Business Start Up’, ‘Tax Issues’, and ‘Intellectual Property Rights’. In the afternoon 3 ex graduates from Illustration (Owen Davey, Emma Dibben, Robert Fresson) will be talking to Level 3 students about how they have built their careers. Two of these ex graduates will also be giving talks to Level 2 students in the morning regarding their working practices.
