Day 4. Rain arrives in NY City

Day four and rain arrives in New York City but it fails to dampen the enthusiasm of  the Falmouth Students as they visit the prestigious 3×3 journal of contemporary illustration and The Wall Street Journal and more…

Charles Hively spent more than two hours talking about the industry and then reviewing each of the fifteen portfolios that were presented. His experienced insight into the current state of illustration and his constructive criticism of work was much appreciated by students as was the free pizza laid on for all attending. Many thanks Charles!

Day 3 in the Big Apple…

Well day three and a half if you include Sunday afternoon.  Too many visits are happening to keep on top of all of them but just a selection from yesterday includes ‘BBH’, ‘ Mendola Illustration Agency’ (30th floor views are the highest of the trip so far). The visits keep coming thick and fast today.

Hannah, Ed, Sarah, Proy, Tashi, Bridget and Joe have just visited American Creative agency Bernstein &Andriulli. Louisa St. Pierre and her colleague Aaron were very generous with their time, spending nearly an hour and a half chatting to the group and reviewing their portfolios. Their insight and advice was incredibly valuable. Students also left with a variety of free promotional books.

More visits tomorrow, including the prestigious illustration journal 3×3. The weather is holding up. Central Park was beautiful this afternoon, while watching a very competitive game of softball. More tomorrow…..

Day 2 of our study visit to New York. Great feedback from students on the appointments that they’ve had up until now. Trips to agents like Mendola, publishers like Nobrow and Advertising agencies are already yielding really useful informations great contacts.

The visit to Bartle Bogle & Hegarty was really inspirational in more than one way. Looking out across uptown Manhattan from the 19th floor of a 1920s Art Deco skyscraper it was hard not dream of what it might be like to work in New York, particularly when hearing English accents coming from a number of the creatives working in what was a typically cool and creative workspace. Well done to Josh for  getting there on time and also bringing a copy of the quotes book.

Great Mexican food was to be found (and eaten!) last night just off Thompson st. & Bleecker st (South Greenwich Village) partly in celebration of Mexican National Day. A great area to visit in the evening…

Nobrow visit Falmouth

Apologies for there being such a gap between our last posting and this. We have all been frantically busy with assessment and interviews. We are just about coming up for air! Anyway I thought it would be a good time to start updating you on what has been happening here within the Illustration department at Falmouth University….

Late in January we were fortunate to be able to host Sam Arthur from Nobrow when he visited Falmouth. Our students have seen Sam  talk about the origins of Nobrow before when he gave a talk at our Illustration forum event in London (in collaboration with LCC). This time he brought an updated presentation that gave students an even deeper insight into the Nobrow story. Sam was also able to spend some time with our students in the studio. Many thanks Sam.

More postings to come in the next few days…

Falmouth 1st Year Illustration London Study Trip final post.

This will be the final post from what has been a really successful study trip. Thanks to all the art directors, designers, publishers and agents that gave up their time to see our students. Everyone gained an enormous amount from the experience. Thanks to the students for asking great questions during the visits. Also of course thanks to Sue Clarke and Rachel Dunn for putting so much effort into organising the trip. Here is a final image of students discussing the ‘Face Stamp’ project at design group ‘Human After All’

9 visits have taken place since the last posting. These have included Disney, Egmont, Arena Illustration Agency, ‘Human After All’ (design group), Artit Partners, the Telegraph, Penguin Books, Dorling Kindersley, designer Matt Cooper’s studio, with Phosphor Agency and Walker Books still to come this afternoon.
Yesterday’s Illustration Forum at The London College of Communication was a great success. Catherine Anyango gave a great presentation of her acclaimed Graphic Novel interpretation of Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’. Ian Whadcock (who had travelled down from Macclesfield especially gave a fascinating insight into his own conceptual processes while Matthew Richardson delighted bothe Falmouth and LCC students with case studies of recent work. It was a incredibly valuable day. Thanks to all the speakers and also Paul and Stuart at LCC for allowing us to use the college’s facilities for the day.
I think everyone is beginning to flag a little but it has been a fantastic week and a great ending to the autumn term.
Here are some photos with more to come in future posts.

Harper Collins Visit

A group of 8 students have just visited 2 senior art directors at the literary division of Harper Collins. Designer Julian Humphries hosted what turned out to be an extremely valuable visit. The visit revolved around how illustrators are sourced, the commissioning process, the role of agencies and more. Many thanks to Harper Collins for giving our students the opportunity to visit.
