The Big Draw: Falmouth University

Last week saw the first Big Draw event organised by the illustration department at Falmouth University. The week had been meticulously organised by  senior lecturer Linda Scott and involved workshops from MA student Poppy Robinson and Illustration lecturer Nick Mott and a daily reading from Moby dick by fine art lecturer Gillian Wylde.

The theme, ‘maritime’ was inspired by Linda’s visit to the library archives of the fantastic Maritime Museum in Falmouth who kindly allowed us to source material to kick start visual responses to the theme. The sessions were augmented with maritime sounds and projected images and films related to the core theme and was also filmed by Film students.

Students from a number of courses took part during the week as did pupils from Helston Community College and Treviglas Community College. All in all it was a great experience for us to host and hopefully for those that took part. Many thanks to everyone who made it happen including Nick Mott, Poppy Robinson, Gillian Wylde, The Maritime Museum, The Big Draw, the Falmouth School of Art and in particular Linda Scott.

Here are a selection of images from the week….

THE BIG DRAW: Every Drawing Tells a Story

Throughout the whole of next week the Illustration department at Falmouth University will be hosting a collaborative drawing event as part of the national ‘Big Draw’ initiative. The week will centre around  an open ended experimental drawing project that is based on a maritime theme. The sessions will include audio visual elements, performance, a ‘drawing games club’ and will culminate in a private view at the end of the week. Many thanks to The Falmouth Maritime Museum for access to their library archives and to Linda Scott for organising the event.

The sessions are open to all Falmouth students. Any members of the public that are interested are asked to contact Nigel Owen (nowen@falmouth.ac.uk) for further details….

New Academic Year Starts Here!

After a long (wet) summer break, here we are at the start of a new academic year waiting to welcome a new intake of 1st year BA students and also MA students to start their Illustration studies at FAlmouth University. This comes a week after celebrating with the class of 2015 at their fantastic graduation ceremony, overseen by our new Chancellor, Dawn French. I hope to get more photographs of this event soon.

Staff are looking forward to welcoming the new intake during freshers (induction) week and 2nd and 3rd year students a week later.

This year importantly sees The Illustration Subject area at Falmouth University taking up residence throughout all three floors of the Fox 2 building at the Woodlane Campus. This is important as it not only brings the MA and BA courses together geographically for the first time but also creates more space and light within the studios. The studios are already looking good and are ready to go. Work, including the installation of new windows hopefully will be totally complete by the end of October 2015.

Some great news came in from one of our alumni, Charlotte Orr, who is confirmed as having won the ‘Public Realm’ category under New Talent in the AOI World Illustration Awards. Well done Charlotte!

New Designers Exhibition & Private View

Mark and Keryn have done a great job of putting up, the New Designers Exhibition, the 2nd of our two graduate showcases in London this year. This is physically a considerably bigger show than the D&AD exhibition and includes the majority of this year’s Falmouth Illustration graduating students. This year the students have done a great job of preparing their boards for the exhibition with the help of Cally back in Falmouth. The final show is a credit to the effort that everyone (staff and students) have put in this year. The Private view kicked off at 6pm and before long there was a healthy number of people gathering around the Falmouth stand. In attendance was Ginny Button, Director of the Falmouth School of Art while industry visitors included Sheri Gee from the Folio Society and Louise Power from Walker books amongst others. Also paying a visit during the evening was recent Falmouth Illustration alumni Will Grill, who last week was awarded the Kate Greenaway Gold Medal for his book ‘Shackleton’s Journey’, a project that he began while a student at Falmouth. Here are some pictures from the night….
