Falmouth Illustration at both New Blood and New Designers Graduate Showcases 2017

It’s amazing how quickly a year passes. Here we are again in London with the work of our talented illustration graduates of 2017. It has been a big effort on the part of both staff and students to get work ready for both shows but it has been worth it. The work for both shows was driven up from Falmouth on Monday. Both shows were put up on the Tuesday. Although staff are well seasoned in getting the work up on the wall there is still a nervous tension in the air as the clock ticks down to the point where we have to get out and let the judges in. Big thanks go out to Sue Clarke and Nick Mott for the New Blood build while Keryn Bibby, Tilly McKerrow, Francisco Sousa Lobo and Lydia Hopwood focussed on the larger New Designers Show.

The D&AD New Blood Private View took place last night (Tuesday 4th July). As always seems to happen, the weather seemed to improve on the rain that we left in Cornwall resulting in a hot and sticky Truman Brewery. The PV was well attended with a good number of industry people in attendance. As often happens at Private Views the real business of ‘looking’ at work became more difficult as the space got more and more crowded but it became pretty clear that the Falmouth stand was beginning to attract interest from the likes of the Guardian, Dorling Kindersley, Egmont and others and it was great to see the graduates using the knowledge gained over the three years of the course to engage in networking with these potential future clients. Olivia Healy was recognised for her yellow Pencil win while Calum Heath received a coveted ‘one to watch’ sticker on his work. The work looked amazing on the wall with a great array of dummy books in evidence. Thanks to Keryn and Sue for their hard work in designing the drop banners and the books for the show.

While the New Blood show was going up, across town, Keryn, Tilly, Francisco and Lydia were putting up the New Designers show ahead of tonight’s Private View (Wednesday 5th). This is a much bigger show held in the Business Design centre. The Falmouth Graduates have done a great job of preparing their individual boards and this show is also looking amazing. If you are in London then come along to either or both shows and say hello. More photos and news will follow over the next few days…..

Wunderkammer 2017 Book Launch

The book launch of ‘Wunderkammer 2017’ took place last week in the new Gallery area at the Falmouth Woodlane campus. This is the 2nd edition of ‘Wunderkammer’ otherwise known as The Cabinet of Curiosities and is the successor of our popular ‘Quotes & Sayings’ series. Wunderkammer was inspired by a project that a small number of Falmouth Illustration students developed about 4 years ago. This years edition has surpassed all expectations and provided a fantastic showcase for this years graduates and also given an insight into what our alumni have been up to since graduating.

The book launch was a big success and was the first opportunity for the contributors to get their hands on their own copy of the book. Pages from the book can be seen below. Many thanks to all staff that have contributed to this project, with a special mention for Keryn Bibby who did such an amazing job with the design and Sue Clarke who contributed much to the research and collation of the content.

If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy (£10/copy +pp) then contact Nigel Owen at: nowen@falmouth.ac.uk

1st & 2nd Year Falmouth Illustration student exhibition a great success!

During the this years 3rd year degree show, we have decided to exhibit work from our talented 1st & 2nd year Illustration students. In previous years we have held this show at the Wellington Terrace foundation building but this year it was decided to run it in parallel with the 3rd year show to ensure that more people than ever get to see how talented our students are. The feedback that we have been getting has been tremendous. Well done to Natalie, Sue, Rachel, Linda, Nick, Cally, Rose and of course the students for doing such a good job of displaying the work.

Here are some examples of work from the show…..

New Designers Exhibition & Private View

Mark and Keryn have done a great job of putting up, the New Designers Exhibition, the 2nd of our two graduate showcases in London this year. This is physically a considerably bigger show than the D&AD exhibition and includes the majority of this year’s Falmouth Illustration graduating students. This year the students have done a great job of preparing their boards for the exhibition with the help of Cally back in Falmouth. The final show is a credit to the effort that everyone (staff and students) have put in this year. The Private view kicked off at 6pm and before long there was a healthy number of people gathering around the Falmouth stand. In attendance was Ginny Button, Director of the Falmouth School of Art while industry visitors included Sheri Gee from the Folio Society and Louise Power from Walker books amongst others. Also paying a visit during the evening was recent Falmouth Illustration alumni Will Grill, who last week was awarded the Kate Greenaway Gold Medal for his book ‘Shackleton’s Journey’, a project that he began while a student at Falmouth. Here are some pictures from the night….

Falmouth Illustration at New Blood Graduate Showcase

The D&AD New Blood Graduate Showcase kicked off with its private view last night. Nigel and Sue set the show up earlier in the day in what can only be described as tropical conditions. The Falmouth stand was up and looking good just after lunch giving us a chance to have a look at other stands. The overall standard is very good this year with what seems like more illustration on show than in previous years.

The private View kicked off at 6pm and almost immediately industry clients began to show interest in the work on show by Falmouth students. The contact book has continued to fill up today also. Well done to all the students that attended for their professionalism.

Now we move onto tonight’s New Designers Private View. Mark and Keryn have worked hard to put up a fantastic exhibition at the Business Design Center in Islington. We are all looking forward to catching up with this year’s students one final time. Here are photos from the New Blood PV with more from tonight’s New Designers PV to follow tomorrow….

2015 Falmouth Illustration Degree Show Private View Pics

The 2015 Falmouth Illustration degree show private view kicked off last Friday with the Falmouth School of Art student awards. Joseph Cox won the ‘Outstanding Student Achievement’ Award, while Alex McGinn won the ‘Student Contribution’ award. The winners of the 2015 Reportage were also announced during the evening. Runner up was 2nd year Illustration student Piera Cirefice and the winner was 3rd year Illustration student Robyn Stock.

Both 1st and 2nd year exhibitions were for the first time held at the same time as the main degree show. The combination of all three years showing work on the same night made for a great atmosphere. The Private View before long was the busiest that it’s been for a number of years. Thanks to all the students and staff that worked hard to make the evening such a great success. Here are some photos from the night….

Second Year Falmouth Illustration Student Wins Major Competition

Well done to Eilidh Baker who has won the Pushkin Press Student Illustration Award for book cover design for ‘The Allure of Chanel’ by Paul Morand. The judges said of the winning illustration: “We felt that this wonderfully stylized and enigmatic portrait answered the brief brilliantly. It evokes the period with subtlety, and the use of colour is perfectly judged.”
