Falmouth illustration Students Visit Artworks and the Nobrow Offices

Falmouth students were privileged to visit the offices of Nobrow and Flying Eye books and Artworks Illustration Agency this morning.

Steph and Alex at Artworks have been seeing our 1st year students for many years now and as always gave up an hour of their precious time to talk to students about the illustration industry. The conversation moved between advice on how to approach clients to the roles that agents perform on behalf of their artists. We look forward to when The Artworks team pay us a visit back in Falmouth in the new year.

Shortly after 10 students were privileged to visit the the offices of Nobrow and Flying Eye Books. The co founder of Nobrow, Sam Arthur, has been a friend of the course for a number of years now, having kindly donated the original screen printing bed to the Falmouth school of Art about 18 months ago. He has also spoken at a previous Falmouth. Illustration. Forum and at Falmouth itself. A huge array of amazingly beautiful books were on display for students to peruse and then ultimately buy. Sam gave a talk on the origins of Nobrow and gave great advice to students about how to get their own ideas noticed. This has been a fantastic few years for ex Falmouth Students being commissioned by Nobrow and Flying Eye. Ex Falmouth students that have books published by In particular Flying Eye include; Bjorn Rune Lie, Bryony May Smith, Owen Davey, Ella Bailey and of course Kate Greenaway gold Medal winner Will Grill. Falmouth Students Visit Penguin Books & Egmont

Student from Falmouth BA Illustration visited both Penguin Books and Egmont Childrens Book Publisher today.

Senior designers Chris and Jill were able to stand in at the last minute for ex Falmouth student Richard bravery who was ill today (get well soon Richard). Chris and Jill did a great job of outlining the processes that underpin the design of book covers and how illustrators can get their work in front of the designers at Penguin.

The visit to Egmont was great. Tiffany Leeson, art director and the team gave a wonderfully informative presentation on Childrens books from pre school to young adult, both fiction and nonfiction, focussing on the commissioning of illustrators. Many thanks….

Falmouth Illustration Students Visit ‘Human After All’ and the Telegraph

Sue Clarke took two groups of students to see innovative design group, ‘Human After All’ and then the ‘Telegraph’ yesterday.

Book by Falmouth Alumni Bjorne Rune Lie makes it into Martin Salisbury’s top 100 children’s picture books

Falmouth illustration alumni Bjorne Rune Lie’s book, ‘The Wolf Whistle’ (Nobrow 2010)has been chosen by Martin Salisbury to feature in his book ‘100 Great Children’s Picture Books’. This is a great achievement with Bjorn’s work sitting alongside books by illustrators such as Laura Carlin, Beatrice Alemagna and Jon Klassen.

Falmouth illustration students visit The Guardian

Nine Falmouth illustration students were given an insight into how editorial illustration is commissioned by Maggie Murphy and Pauline Doyle at the Guardian Newspaper this afternoon. It was a fascinating visit and great to know that our Falmouth Illustration alumni from last year, Thomas Pullin, is still producing great work for the Guardian.

December 2015 1st year London Study trip starts!

Finally after a long train journey from Cornwall we have arrived in London for this year’s study trip.

This year’s trip is lining up to be a good one. visits that have been organised for students include: Faber & Faber, Sparks Studio, Human After All, The Guardian, The Telegraph Magazine, Penguin Books, Egmont, Oh Comely Magazine, Walker Books, The Folio Society, The Artworks, Transworld, Nobrow, Tate Publishing and Dorling Kindersley.

Students can also look forward to our annual Illustration Forum, held at The London College of Communication on Thursday. Speakers this year are: Olivier Kugler, Jonny Hannah and Aude Van Ryn

The Big Draw: Falmouth University

Last week saw the first Big Draw event organised by the illustration department at Falmouth University. The week had been meticulously organised by senior lecturer Linda Scott and involved workshops from MA student Poppy Robinson and Illustration lecturer Nick Mott and a daily reading from Moby dick by fine art lecturer Gillian Wylde.

The theme, ‘maritime’ was inspired by Linda’s visit to the library archives of the fantastic Maritime Museum in Falmouth who kindly allowed us to source material to kick start visual responses to the theme. The sessions were augmented with maritime sounds and projected images and films related to the core theme and was also filmed by Film students.

Students from a number of courses took part during the week as did pupils from Helston Community College and Treviglas Community College. All in all it was a great experience for us to host and hopefully for those that took part. Many thanks to everyone who made it happen including Nick Mott, Poppy Robinson, Gillian Wylde, The Maritime Museum, The Big Draw, the Falmouth School of Art and in particular Linda Scott.
