THE BIG DRAW: Every Drawing Tells a Story

Throughout the whole of next week the Illustration department at Falmouth University will be hosting a collaborative drawing event as part of the national ‘Big Draw’ initiative. The week will centre around  an open ended experimental drawing project that is based on a maritime theme. The sessions will include audio visual elements, performance, a ‘drawing games club’ and will culminate in a private view at the end of the week. Many thanks to The Falmouth Maritime Museum for access to their library archives and to Linda Scott for organising the event.

The sessions are open to all Falmouth students. Any members of the public that are interested are asked to contact Nigel Owen (nowen@falmouth.ac.uk) for further details….

New Academic Year Starts Here!

After a long (wet) summer break, here we are at the start of a new academic year waiting to welcome a new intake of 1st year BA students and also MA students to start their Illustration studies at FAlmouth University. This comes a week after celebrating with the class of 2015 at their fantastic graduation ceremony, overseen by our new Chancellor, Dawn French. I hope to get more photographs of this event soon.

Staff are looking forward to welcoming the new intake during freshers (induction) week and 2nd and 3rd year students a week later.

This year importantly sees The Illustration Subject area at Falmouth University taking up residence throughout all three floors of the Fox 2 building at the Woodlane Campus. This is important as it not only brings the MA and BA courses together geographically for the first time but also creates more space and light within the studios. The studios are already looking good and are ready to go. Work, including the installation of new windows hopefully will be totally complete by the end of October 2015.

Some great news came in from one of our alumni, Charlotte Orr, who is confirmed as having won the ‘Public Realm’ category under New Talent in the AOI World Illustration Awards. Well done Charlotte!

New Designers Exhibition & Private View

Mark and Keryn have done a great job of putting up, the New Designers Exhibition, the 2nd of our two graduate showcases in London this year. This is physically a considerably bigger show than the D&AD exhibition and includes the majority of this year’s Falmouth Illustration graduating students. This year the students have done a great job of preparing their boards for the exhibition with the help of Cally back in Falmouth. The final show is a credit to the effort that everyone (staff and students) have put in this year. The Private view kicked off at 6pm and before long there was a healthy number of people gathering around the Falmouth stand. In attendance was Ginny Button, Director of the Falmouth School of Art while industry visitors included Sheri Gee from the Folio Society and Louise Power from Walker books amongst others. Also paying a visit during the evening was recent Falmouth Illustration alumni Will Grill, who last week was awarded the Kate Greenaway Gold Medal for his book ‘Shackleton’s Journey’, a project that he began while a student at Falmouth. Here are some pictures from the night….

Falmouth Illustration Degree Show 2015

The Falmouth Illustration Degree show 2015 starts this Friday (5th June) with a Private view in the evening between 6-9pm. The best work from this year’s third years will be on display on the top floor of the Fox 2 Building at Woodlane prior to it going up to the two major London graduate shows New Designers and D&AD New Blood. This will be one of the first chances to glimpse the new generation of talented illustrators from the Falmouth course and also purchase your own copy of our newly published ‘Illustrated Book of Quotes & Sayings: Vol 10’. Some student work will be on sale at the show too. The show will be open from 10am on Friday 5th June and will end at 4pm on Monday 8th June. Don’t miss it! If you are in Falmouth on the Friday please feel free to attend the Private View.

Falmouth Illustration Student Business Cards 2015

Here are a sample of business cards from Falmouth Illustration students. Their degree show will be open to the public on Friday 5th of June in Falmouth. The majority of students will also be showing work at their year’s New Designers Graduate Showcase at the business design centre in London between the 1st – 4th July 2015. Apologies to any Falmouth student whose card is not on this post. Please get your card to Nigel and he will post it on this blog ASAP….

Falmouth illustration Degree show goes up.

The third years have been working hard to hang their final degree shows just prior to handing the work in for assessment. All are looking forward to the Private. View on Friday 5th June….

The studio is cleared in preparation for the degree show

Amazingly its that time of year again! The 3rd year students have only been back in Falmouth for little over a week since their successful study trip to New York and London but now attention has shifted towards preparing their work to submit for hand in. The studios have been cleared and the display boards erected.

1st and 2nd years are also working hard to put the finishing touches to their work before the hand in deadlines. They also are preparing for their own end of year shows during the final week of term. Good Luck to all of our students for their upcoming assessments.

It’s really great to hear that some of our ex students are doing well professionally, David Plant and Owen Davey have both recently produced books for Nobrow’s young audience off shoot Flying Eye Books, while Lauren Humphrey has recently been published in the New York Times.

The Falmouth School of Art Degree Show 2015 will be running from 5th June – 9th June.

New York and London: May 2015

Our 3rd year Illustration students have recently returned from yet another fantastic study trip to New York. They had researched and organised a wide variety of visits to numerous art directors, publishers and agents. The intention of the study trip was to gain critical feedback on their final portfolios from some of the best commissioners of illustration in the world. They were not disappointed!

The New York week included visits amongst others to:

The New York Times / The New Yorker / The Wall Street Journal / Mendola Agency / Men’s Health Magazine / Holiday House / Chase Design Group / Penguin Books / Little Brown Publishing / Nobrow

A small group of students were also able to visit the legendary Push Pin Studios where they met Seymour Chwast who cofounded the studio with Milton Glaser in 1954 (incidentally a number of our students met Milton Glaser on the New York trip 2 years ago).

The London week included visits amongst others to:

Harper Collins / Walker Books / Arena Illustration Agency / The Telegraph / Artworks Illustration Agency and more…

The student have returned buzzing with inspiration and energy which is great as they now have a week and a half to prepare there work for the end of year submission. Thanks to all the hard work that Mark Keryn and Sue have put into helping organise these trips. Here are some images from both trips….

Falmouth Illustration Students Visit Penguin Books

Eight illustration students from Falmouth University have just come out of a really interesting and insightful visit to Penguin Books. Two of the art departments senior lecturers gave up almost an hour of their time to pass on their personal experience of working within the publishing industry. They talked at length about how they source illustrators (predominantly online now), how they commission illustration, the realities of what goes on in editorial meetings, their personal journey to become art directors and much more. We are very grateful to them for spending some of their valuable time to talk to us. Falmouth already has direct links with Penguin through our ex student Richard Bravery working as a senior designer there, but we also found out that a recent Falmouth illustration graduate, Jess Hart was starting within the design department the very day we were visiting. It’s a shame that we were not able to hook up, good luck Jess! The 'de briefing in Pret after the visit
