Falmouth Illustration’s Reportage 2015 Competition Judging Complete!
Many thanks to all students that entered this year’s ‘Reportage’ competition. 16 students across the School of Art entered this year and the standard was very good. Five members of the illustration teaching team judged the work that was submitted on Monday afternoon. The winner and runner up are now known and will be announced on the evening of the degree show private view (Friday 5th June).
Here is a sample of the work submitted this year….
Hot off the press! The latest ‘Quotes & Sayings’ annual (Volume 10)
1200 copies of the 10th Volume of our very successful ‘Quotes & Sayings’ annual were delivered recently just in time to be taken to New York and London. The book looks great thanks to the efforts of all the students that took part, and to Keryn Bibby who did such a great job in designing and typesetting the book.
This book has now become well known amongst many of the top art directors both in Europe and the U.S. and showcases the work of our 3rd year students. Packed with over 90 full colour illustrated spreads in serves as an illustration source book for the visual communication industry.
This will be the last year that we publish the Quotes book. After ten great years we feel that next year will be a good opportunity to run with a new concept. Ideas on the back of a postcard please….
Quotes & Sayings Vol 10 will become officially available at our summer degree show. Please contact Nigel Owen (nowen@falmouth.ac.uk) if you are interested in obtaining a copy.
Falmouth Students visit The Folio Society
Ten Falmouth Illustration students visited The Folio Society yesterday. Art Director Sheri Gee gave the students a warm welcome before taking them through the commissioning process. The students asked excellent questions and got a lot out of the visit and left the visit inspired. Previous Falmouth students that have been commissioned by The Folio Society include Finn Campbell-Notman and James Boswell.
Great Visit to Hodder Childrens Books
Seven Falmouth Illustration students were treated to a fantastic professional practice visit to Hodder Childrens Books this afternoon. After a long walk from Russell Square everyone was feeling a little cold but we got a warm welcome from Emma Layfield who had prepared a presentation of the children’s book publishing process. She outlined what was current popular for Hodder and explained the differences between the UK and US markets. She discussed the close working relationship that they encourage between authors, illustrators and art directors and editors. She also gave a really useful breakdown of the international market particularly in relation to both the Bolgna and Frankfurt book fairs. It was heartening to hear her passion for new and upcoming illustrators and we really want to nurture this relationship with Hodder in the future. After about an hour packed with extremely useful advice we were once again outside in the crisp London evening air but inspired and with plenty to think about.
Falmouth Illustration Students Visit Penguin Books
Eight illustration students from Falmouth University have just come out of a really interesting and insightful visit to Penguin Books. Two of the art departments senior lecturers gave up almost an hour of their time to pass on their personal experience of working within the publishing industry. They talked at length about how they source illustrators (predominantly online now), how they commission illustration, the realities of what goes on in editorial meetings, their personal journey to become art directors and much more. We are very grateful to them for spending some of their valuable time to talk to us. Falmouth already has direct links with Penguin through our ex student Richard Bravery working as a senior designer there, but we also found out that a recent Falmouth illustration graduate, Jess Hart was starting within the design department the very day we were visiting. It’s a shame that we were not able to hook up, good luck Jess!
Falmouth Illustration takes part in summer school.
Falmouth university has been hosting workshops this week for A’level students with aview to giving them a insight into what it is like to study at an institution like Falmouth. The illustration department hosted 19 students during a 2 hour workshop in the morning. The session started with an overview of the subject of illustration and review of some professional portfolios. The students asked some really insightful and intelligent questions. We then continued with a mind mapping exercise before moving onto the classic ‘Exquisite Corpse’ exercise. This always a fun session but has serious intentions. Through using their mind mapped ideas they were able to develop strong themed solutions. After coffee, the ‘corpses’ were revealed and the morning moved into media experimentation. The session was a lot of fun. We’d like to thank Natalie Hayes for jointly running the session, the student ambassadors for helping out and of course to the students who we hope got something useful out of the experience.
Falmouth Illustration gets ready for New Designers and New Blood 2014
The studios are empty, most work is off the display boards now, hardly any students are to be seen. The distant sound of Wimbledon can be heard through open windows. It can only mean one thing; the lull before the creative storm that is the New Designers and D&AD New Blood graduate showcases. Staff are working hard to get everything ready to be packed away into vans and driven up to the capital on Friday. Watch out London! Falmouth are coming…
Any ex Falmouth students, that want to come along, it would be great to see you…
