Visits to Nobrow and The Artworks

Tuesday saw four visits take place. Sue took 10 students to visit Sam Arthur at Nobrow. Nobrow is an increasingly influential independent publisher both within the UK and International market. In recent years its young audience imprint, Flying Eye Books has been drawing attention and has become known for its innovative and brave approach the the young audience market. Nobrow has built a connection with Falmouth illustration over the last couple of years, having published graduates such as Ella Bailey, David Doran and recently to great acclaim, Will Grill whose award winning Flying Eye book, ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ has caught the eye of critics both in the UK and the US and was recently voted into the top ten Childrens Picture Books in the New York Times Book Review.

Nobrow has also, very recently, and very kindly donated a considerable amount of screen printing equipment to Falmouth as part of their studio restructure. Many thanks for that donation Sam and for seeing students who really appreciated the experience.

Later during the morning Nigel took 10 students to see Artworks Illustration Agency. Artworks are one of the most established agents in London and in our opinion one of the best. Their approach to managing their artists is really professional and their understanding of the industry is second to none. Students learnt an enormous amount from the hour that we spent with Alex and Lucy. Afterwards we were able to squeeze in a visit to a great bookshop round the corner called ‘Material‘. I highly recommend this bookshop. It stocks a treasure trove of the most beautiful books covering most of the visual arts and including a number of Nobrow and Flying Eye books. I couldn’t resist purchasing the Nobrow concertina ‘Swan Lake‘ by Ping Zhu.

More Visits for Falmouth Students (Egmont Children’s Books and The Telegraph)

The creative team at Egmont Children’s Books went out of their way to present our students with an insightful view of the various facets of this successful publishing company.

A couple of hours after the Egmont visit Sue and a group of six students arrived at the Telegraph for a meeting with Art Director, Gary Cochrane. This visit was a real eye opener for students who were taken into the heart of one of the UKs most established broad sheet newspapers. Editorial illustration remains an important component of the course at Falmouth and this visit was great opportunity to ask an experienced art director the kind of questions that only an art director can answer.

Falmouth Students visit The Folio Society

Ten Falmouth Illustration students visited The Folio Society yesterday. Art Director Sheri Gee gave the students a warm welcome before taking them through the commissioning process. The students asked excellent questions and got a lot out of the visit and left the visit inspired. Previous Falmouth students that have been commissioned by The Folio Society include Finn Campbell-Notman and James Boswell.

Great Visit to Hodder Childrens Books

Hodders Childrens Books

Hodders Childrens Books

Seven Falmouth Illustration students were treated to a fantastic professional practice visit to Hodder Childrens Books this afternoon. After a long walk from Russell Square everyone was feeling a little cold but we got a warm welcome from Emma Layfield who had prepared a presentation of the children’s book publishing process. She outlined what was current popular for Hodder and explained the differences between the UK and US markets. She discussed the close working relationship that they encourage between authors, illustrators and art directors and editors. She also gave a really useful breakdown of the international market particularly in relation to both the Bolgna and Frankfurt book fairs. It was heartening to hear her passion for new and upcoming illustrators and we really want to nurture this relationship with Hodder in the future. After about an hour packed with extremely useful advice we were once again outside in the crisp London evening air but inspired and with plenty to think about.

Falmouth Illustration Students Visit Penguin Books

Eight illustration students from Falmouth University have just come out of a really interesting and insightful visit to Penguin Books. Two of the art departments senior lecturers gave up almost an hour of their time to pass on their personal experience of working within the publishing industry. They talked at length about how they source illustrators (predominantly online now), how they commission illustration, the realities of what goes on in editorial meetings, their personal journey to become art directors and much more. We are very grateful to them for spending some of their valuable time to talk to us. Falmouth already has direct links with Penguin through our ex student Richard Bravery working as a senior designer there, but we also found out that a recent Falmouth illustration graduate, Jess Hart was starting within the design department the very day we were visiting. It’s a shame that we were not able to hook up, good luck Jess! The 'de briefing in Pret after the visit

Our 1st year llustration students arrive in London today for our annual trip to visit some of the best art directors, publishers, designers and illustration agents in the world. It should be an amazing week that will culminate in the illustration Forum that we jointly hold for our students and the LCC illustration students at the Elephant and Castle site. Lucinda Rogers, Mark Smith and Cyriak will be speaking at the event. Other visits that will be taking place this week include; Artworks illustration Agency, Nobrow, The Folio Society, Harper Collins, Transworld, Hodder Childrens Books, Arena Illustration Agency, Human After All, Egmont, You Magazine, Saatchi & Saatchi, Dorling Kindersley, Walker Books, Dorling Kindersley, the. Telegraph, Penguin Books, Dutch Uncle Agency. There is of course also a lot going on in the way of exhibitions at the moment. Will try and keep posting updates as often as I can.

There is a stack of news that has built up over what has been a very busy term so far and so I will start to feed this through into the blog in various postingsover the next couple of weeks so that we can get up to date.

Falmouth Illustration takes part in summer school.

Falmouth university has been hosting workshops this week for A’level students with aview to giving them a insight into what it is like to study at an institution like Falmouth. The illustration department hosted 19 students during a 2 hour workshop in the morning. The session started with an overview of the subject of illustration and review of some professional portfolios. The students asked some really insightful and intelligent questions. We then continued with a  mind mapping exercise before moving onto the classic  ‘Exquisite Corpse’ exercise. This always a fun session but has serious intentions. Through using their mind mapped ideas they were able to develop strong themed solutions. After coffee, the ‘corpses’ were revealed and the morning moved into media experimentation. The session was a lot of fun. We’d like to thank Natalie Hayes for jointly running the session, the student ambassadors for helping out and of course to the students who we hope got something useful out of the experience.

New Designers Show a great success for Falmouth illustration!

Hot on the heals of the New Blood private View came the New Designers graduate showcase at the Business Design centre in Islington, North London. Falmouth Illustration have shown at this event for many years. This year mark Foreman was able to secure possibly the best location in the exhibition that we have ever had.  The Falmouth graduates had put a lot of effort into presenting their work at its best at it showed. The work looked fantastic and as with New Blood drew the crowds in to have a closer look. Once again a number of major publishers and agents attended and made a point of speaking to Falmouth students. amongst them we’re representatives from Anderson Press, Templar publishing, Arena Illustration agency and Handsome Frank illustration agency. It was great to see some of our alumni attending such as Chloe Luxford, Liv Bargman, Clare Elsom, James Cottell and Kasia Dudzuik as well as the majority of this years graduating year. We hope that you all keep in touch.  This show continues until the end of Saturday.

Falmouth Illustration success at D&AD New Blood graduate showcase!

A great evening was had by all at the 2014 New Blood show in London’s Spitalfield’s market last Tuesday. The evening started off with the news that Fiona Rose Batey from Falmouth had won one of the coveted New Blood Best in Show Awards. This is a great achievement when you become aware of the great work coming from other illustration courses around the country? The atmosphere at the private view was buzzing with a number of significant art directors, agents and designers spending a long time looking at students work both on the wall and in dummy books. Really good contacts have been made at this show and Falmouth’s reputation for producing talented and interesting illustrators has certainly been enhanced. The show continues for today (Thursday 3rd July) and will come down on Friday. Get down to see it if you are in the area.

Falmouth illustration set up at D&AD New Blood graduate showcase.

Sue and Nigel with help from Mark set up the New Blood show this morning. We had about four hours to get things right. After an initial concern that the boards were put up slightly differently to previous years we were able to get the drop banners hung and looking good. The very heavy presentation boxes were tricky to manoeuvre into place but all came good in the end. The students work looks great on the wall. The photography repro department always excel themselves with incredibly high quality prints that really show off the work at its best. The dummy books that students have produced and are on show are also of a high standard. Sue and myself only had a very quick chance to look around the other stands but there was some great work on display from other illustration courses. Well done to everyone involved. We are looking forward to tonight’s PV and catching up with some students from current previous years.

We are also looking forward to getting over to the New Designers show tomorrow. Mark and Keryn have been working hard on getting this equally important show looking fantastic. It seems amazing that both shows are happening simultaneously but hopefully it means that students can get to both during the week. We are also looking forward to a great private view at Islington (New Designers) on. Wednesday. I will hopefully be able to focus a blog on new Designers shortly.
